Choosing the Perfect Paint Color for Your Home
Picking the right paint colour is an exciting way to refresh your space—but with endless options, it can also feel a bit overwhelming.
The right shade can completely transform a room, setting the perfect mood and tying together your home’s design. That’s why we’ve put together this simple, step-by-step guide to help you choose a colour that complements your space and reflects your style.
Step 1: Look at Your Home’s Design Elements
Before diving into swatches, take a good look around your space and ask yourself:
Do I have warm design elements like wood floors, a tile backsplash, or furniture that should influence my color choice?
Am I planning to update any of these features soon?
Does my home already have a specific colour palette that I want to work with?
Even if you have a particular color in mind, it’s important to consider how it will interact with the existing elements in your space. Sometimes, the best choice is one you hadn’t originally considered—but it makes everything come together beautifully!
Step 2: Gather Inspiration & Brainstorm
Now for the fun part—finding inspiration! Here are a few ways to get those creative juices flowing:
Browse Pinterest for colour palettes and room ideas
Ask friends, neighbours, or family for recommendations
Consult with a professional colour expert for personalized advice
If you’re looking for expert guidance, we work with several local colour consultants who can help you select the perfect shade for your space.
Their services typically range from $150–$200, and they can take the guesswork out of your decision.
Step 3: Get Samples Made
One of the most important steps in choosing the right paint colour is sampling. A small swatch or digital image can be deceiving, so testing the colour in your actual space is essential.
Here are the best ways to do it:
Drawdowns
This is my personal favourite method. You can ask paint stores like Hirshfield’s or Sherwin-Williams to create “drawdowns” of your chosen colours.
Here’s how it works:
- The store will first mix a quart of paint in your selected colour.
- If you specifically ask for a drawdown, they will apply that paint onto an 8x10 piece of card stock.
- These drawdowns cost about the same as peel-and-stick samples, but you get two for the price of one.
- Paint stores can typically have them ready the same day.
Hold these drawdowns up to your walls, flooring, cabinetry, and other design elements to see how well they complement each other.
Peel-and-Stick Samples
If you prefer something more flexible, Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams offer peel-and-stick samples. These allow you to place the colour directly on your walls and move it around your space without committing to paint.
Test in Different Lighting Conditions
Lighting can dramatically impact how a colour appears in your home. Make sure to view your samples at different times of the day and under various lighting conditions to ensure you’re happy with the final look.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the perfect paint colour takes a mix of careful consideration, inspiration, and proper sampling. By following these steps, you’ll feel confident in your selection and create a space that truly reflects your style.
